Religion and Popular Culture

This course examines some of the many connections between religion and media in contemporary U.S. culture. The class is divided into three sections. We begin with an overview of how media studies scholars have considered the intersections of religion and media. In the second section, we analyze how a number of media texts (film, television, and online) have represented both specific religious groups and religion in general. In the final section, we will examine the intersection of religion and society. Religion is appears in and is shaped by culture and popular culture is integrated into the fabric of religion. We will examine the interchange among media, religion and culture with the goal of understanding how to think, talk and write about their interplay.
